How to Reduce your Risk of Getting Lymphedema after Breast Cancer Surgery administrator 0 Views • 2 years ago

How do you reduce your risk of getting lymphedema after Surgery for Breast Cancer? The information provided by various providers and online may be very outdated, so be careful. Since 2018, there has been significant changes, supported by research, to what we know is true vs what is more of a myth. Unfortunately, this can be very confusing and cause limitations and barriers to individual’s living their daily lives and quality of life.

This video is here to provide what the updated knowledge is (as of 2020) to clear as much confusion as possible. Yes, I understand it's still a controversy, but this video is my personal opinion on the topic, based on the research. Please remain respectful if you'd like to discuss other opinions.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage for Breast Lymphedema & Swelling: How to Complete a Lymphatic Massage administrator 0 Views • 2 years ago

Lymphedema drainage, or lymphatic drainage massage, is an important part of managing lymphedema and swelling after breast surgery for breast cancer, including mastectomy and lumpectomy. Radiation can also attribute to breast swelling. Follow along for a FULL manual lymph drainage (MLD) routine for breast and chest lymphedema. I describe the techniques and sequence I use to decrease lymphedema and also address fibrosis.

Breast Lymphedema and Swelling Treatment
Breast Lymphedema and Swelling Treatment administrator 1 Views • 2 years ago

Breast and Chest Lymphedema or Swelling is a common side effect after breast surgery and radiation for breast cancer.

There are a few main ways we treat and reduce breast swelling in therapy, including:

Compression- a bra like this one from Prairie Wear is one of the best options.
Hugger Prima Bra, for medium to high compression:
https://shrsl.com/3gfbk
Hugger Vida Bra, for low to medium compression: https://shrsl.com/3gfbu

Along with that, adding a swell spot like this one from lohmann rauscher usa can help soften fibrosis and add compression. Various sizes and shapes can be found at https://bit.ly/3qEWwFG and code KELLY10 will save you 10%

Lymphatic Drainage - using a specific sequence can help move the fluid out of the area. See my YouTube video for step-by-step here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSXIcxwkc6A&t=151s

Exercise- using your muscles and help pump the fluid out of the area. Just be sure to start gentle and slow. See my exercise video playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID6ycAOZOcw&list=PLEMlEDKDlobmKbKZ0mbbBEHWgyJ1R7BSP

Deep breathing - this stimulates the deep lymphatics in the abdomen. There is a video for this, too!

Kinesiology Tape- an excellent option for mild swelling and those who don’t tolerate compression. Do you want a detailed video?

Weight management - a healthy lifestyle can make a difference.

Avoid Infections -this speaks for itself, but awareness helps!

How to Screen for Lymphedema after Breast Cancer Surgery or Radiation #shorts
How to Screen for Lymphedema after Breast Cancer Surgery or Radiation #shorts administrator 2 Views • 2 years ago

Lymphedema is a lifelong disease that doesn't currently have a cure. However, if we catch lymphedema early and start to treat it right away, we have a greater chance of avoid the swelling from getting any worse, or in some cases, we can reverse it, and the swelling will completely go away!
👩🏻‍⚕️Routine screenings with a Certified Lymphedema Therapist can help detect any early signs of swelling. Still, it's also important to know what signs and symptoms to look for yourself.
Lymphedema caused by breast cancer treatment will only occur in the arm or chest/trunk on the side where lymph nodes were removed or that were radiated.
The risk for lymphedema is lifelong, but the greatest risk is the first 1-2 years after cancer treatment.
📋 Take a brief moment to check for swelling daily or weekly. Look for swelling or changes in or around the:
🤚🏽Hand and Fingers
🙅🏽‍♀️Forearm
💁🏼‍♀️Elbow
💪🏾Upper arm
🙆🏻‍♀️ Breast
🙋🏾‍♀️Chest
💍 You also want to watch and see if jewelry, bras, or clothes fit tighter on this side and if they stay this way for more than a couple of days, this potentially can be swelling.
Some may not see swelling but may feel aching, discomfort, or new heaviness in the arm or breast. You may also notice that the joints get stiff in your elbow or fingers and are difficult to bend. If you experience any feelings of pins and needles, itching, or if you have a cut or scratch that won't heal, these may all also be signs of swelling or lymphedema, and it's best to reach out to your lymphedema therapist or oncology team.
