Billy was diagnosed with Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm (LAMN) on November 16, 2019 after a routine Umbilical Hernia repair surgery. It turned out that there was no hernia — Billy has Stage 4 Appendix Cancer.

At UCSD, Billy had Post Cytoreduction Surgery (CRS) where the affected organs were removed — his appendix, spleen, half of his stomach, part of his colon, and his bellybutton were removed. The mucinous cancer was able to be stripped from the liver, leaving the liver intact. After the CRS was done, Dr. Lowy performed Hyperthermic IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) procedure. The entire CRS + HIPEC lasted 7 1/2 hours.

It affects approximately 7% of the population, with the highest incidence occurring between the ages of 10 and 30.


What is Appendicitis?


Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch-like organ located in the lower right abdomen.


The appendix's primary function is still debated among scientists, but some suggest it may play a role in the immune system.


Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked, often due to an infection, fecal matter, or other foreign objects.


If left untreated, appendicitis can lead to life-threatening complications, such as a ruptured appendix or peritonitis, a severe infection of the abdominal lining.


Appendix Location


The appendix is a small, finger-like tube that extends from the large intestine, specifically the cecum, on the lower right side of the abdomen.


Its exact position can vary slightly from person to person, but it generally resides in the abdomen's right lower quadrant (RLQ).


Understanding the appendix's location is essential as it differentiates appendicitis from other abdominal issues, such as gastrointestinal infections, kidney stones, or ovarian cysts.


Appendicitis Symptoms


Appendicitis symptoms can vary among individuals, but there are several common signs.


These symptoms include Abdominal pain: The pain often begins near the navel and migrates to the lower right side of the abdomen. The pain may become more severe when moving, coughing, or taking deep breaths.


Abdominal swelling: The abdomen may become swollen and tender to the touch, especially on the lower right side.


Loss of appetite: Individuals with appendicitis may experience a lack of appetite and may even feel nauseous.


Fever: A low-grade fever (usually between 99-102°F or 37.2-38.9°C) can accompany appendicitis.


Recognizing these symptoms helps establish an early diagnosis and treatment, leading to a successful recovery.


Treatment of appendicitis

Appendicitis is typically treated with surgery to remove the inflamed appendix, known as an appendectomy. Antibiotics may sometimes be prescribed to treat the infection before surgery.
