Brain Stem Glioma - Childhood

Pediatric low-grade gliomas (pLGG) are the most common type of brain tumor in children, with around 1700 cases diagnosed each year. Although these tumors grow and spread more slowly than high-grade tumors, half of the children who undergo surgery will end up relapsing and require additional treatments.
If your child has been diagnosed with pLGG, having a better understanding of this disease can help you make informed decisions about your child’s journey from diagnosis through survivorship. In our most recent webinar supported by Day One Biopharmaceuticals, Dr. Tab Cooney, the Medical Director of Day One Biopharmaceuticals, and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation came together to educate the community about common types of pLGGs and treatments and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Brain tumors are an abnormal growth of cells in the brain or brain covering or in the surrounding bone structures. It can be benign or non-cancerous or malignant or cancerous. A major symptom is a headache and the other symptoms are double vision, numbness of the face, weakness in one side of the face, diminished hearing, difficulty in swallowing, balance problems, etc. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy and some medications are adjuvant treatments rather than the primary treatment so mainly operative treatments are done for the brain tumor.

Brain tumors in children are a rare but serious condition that can impact their health and quality of life. Understanding the different types of brain tumors is crucial for parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care for affected children. This video will cover the various types of brain tumors in children, ranging from benign to malignant.
Benign tumors are non-cancerous growths that do not spread to other parts of the body. In children, the most common type of benign brain tumor is pilocytic astrocytoma. These tumors usually grow slowly and are typically found in the cerebellum or optic nerve. Symptoms of pilocytic astrocytoma may include headaches, nausea, vomiting, or vision problems.
Another type of benign brain tumor is the craniopharyngioma, which usually grows near the pituitary gland. These tumors can cause symptoms such as hormone imbalances, visual changes, and headaches. While benign, craniopharyngiomas can still be dangerous if they grow large enough to put pressure on surrounding structures.
Malignant brain tumors are cancerous growths that can spread to other parts of the body. These tumors are less common in children than in adults, but they are more aggressive and have a higher mortality rate. The most common type of malignant brain tumor in children is medulloblastoma, which usually develops in the cerebellum. Symptoms of medulloblastoma may include vomiting, headaches, and difficulty with balance or coordination.
Another type of malignant brain tumor is glioma, which can develop anywhere in the brain or spinal cord. There are several subtypes of glioma, including ependymomas and astrocytomas. Symptoms of glioma can vary depending on the location and size of the tumor, but may include seizures, headaches, and changes in behavior or personality.
Treatment options for brain tumors in children depend on the type and location of the tumor, as well as the child's age and overall health. Surgery is often the first-line treatment for brain tumors, as it can help to remove as much of the tumor as possible. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may also be used to kill cancer cells and prevent the tumor from growing or spreading.
In addition to medical treatment, children with brain tumors may benefit from supportive care and rehabilitation services. These services can help children manage symptoms, cope with the emotional impact of the diagnosis, and regain any lost skills or abilities.
Overall, brain tumors in children are a serious condition that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. Understanding the different types of brain tumors and their symptoms can help parents and caregivers recognize the signs of the disease and seek medical attention as soon as possible. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, many children with brain tumors can go on to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
In conclusion, this video has provided an overview of the various types of brain tumors in children, from benign to malignant. While these tumors are rare, they can have a significant impact on a child's health and well-being. Parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals can work together to ensure that children with brain tumors receive the best possible care and support. By raising awareness about this condition and its symptoms, we can help to improve outcomes for children with brain tumors and their families.
