Technical video (2020) / Laparoscopic surgery / Dr Maher A. Abbas

Appendix mucocele is an uncommon condition of the appendix. While the majority of these lesions are benign, some can be related to cancerous growth. Most patients with mucocele present incidentally as documented by cross-sectional abdominal imaging or during abdominal surgery. Historically, these lesions have been managed with open surgery. With the introduction of laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery), appendiceal mucocele can be excised safely with laparoscopic surgery. Care is taken to perform a meticulous dissection to retrieve the appendix intact with the mucocele in a bag to protect against rupture in order to minimize short and long-term complications. In this video, Dr. Maher A. Abbas and colleagues demonstrate the technique of laparoscopic resection of mucocele of the appendix.

Dr Maher A. Abbas is an internationally renowned colorectal surgeon. He currently cares for local and international patients in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
