Endometriosis is a condition wherein the lining of the womb can be found in various places in the body, most commonly inside the peritoneal cavity (tummy) especially on the ovary and behind the uterus.

Endometriosis can cause cyst formation in the ovary. The cyst contains chocolate coloured fluid inside. The cyst if present can cause pain abdomen throughout the month and especially during periods. It can also cause difficulty in conceiving.

Endometriosis can cause painful periods (pain during the menstrual cycle), heavy periods, passage of clots during periods, pain during intercourse, pain even after periods have finished, spotting throughout the month, intermenstrual spotting, dull aching pain all through the month.

We don't know why endometriosis happens but there are several theories, none of which have been proven.

Laparoscopy is the best method of removing the cyst but it must be done carefully so as to not damage the ovary as it can reduce the ovarian reserve and thus reduce fertility. On the other hand, if the cyst is not removed completely, it can recur and come back soon thus increasing the chances of another laparoscopic surgery.

This video demonstrates how to safely remove even cysts as big as 10 cm without causing any damage to the ovary and also ensuring lower chances of recurrence.
