Hydrosalpinx is fluid-filled damaged fallopian tube. It can happen because of any infection or if the mouth of the tube gets stuck to surrounding structures inside the tummy causing the opening to get blocked. Fluid then fills inside causing swelling.

It can cause pain, high fever and difficulty in conceiving even if one is undergoing an IVF. Although fallopian tubes are not required in an IVF, the dirty fluid inside the hydrosalpinx can drain back into the womb and reduce the chances of the embryo implanting there.

Diagnosis is best done via Ultrasound. Fallopian tubes are normally not seen on ultrasound. If they are seen that means they are damaged and probably fluid-filled and need removal.

Hydrosalpinx needs the removal of the affected fallopian tube. Sometimes the tube might be so badly stuck to the surrounding structures that removing it might damage the surrounding structures. In that case, only the connection of the fallopian tube with the uterus is cut so that the fluid does not drain back into the womb.
