(sactosalpinx)

An blocked fallopian tube filled with a collection of fluid (serum, blood, or pus).

(Types: fluid)
• pyosalpinx: pus (infected)
• hematosalpinx: blood

(Symptoms)
• asymptomatic (most common)
• infertility
• pain in the lower abdomen
• discolored or sticky vaginal discharge
• ectopic pregnancy

(Causes)
• pelvic inflammatory disease (e.g chlamydia (most common), gonorrhea)
• sexually transmitted infection
• appendicitis
• endometriosis: Often caues hematosalpinx.
• severe pelvic adhesion: Adhesion or scarring bind adjacent organs together (e.g. fallopian tubes, uterus, ovaries, bladder). Primarily caused by the inflammation or infection of pelvic area.
• ovulation induction: Fertility treatment to stimulate regular ovulation.
• post-hysterectomy (without salpingo-oophorectomy)
• tubal ligation
• tubal malignancy: Primary or secondary tumors of the fallopian tubes.
• previous surgery (particularly, surgeries on the fallopian tube)

(Complication)
• tubal torsion: Torsion of the ovary and fallopian tube. It occurs when they become twisted on the ovarian ligament and suspensory ligament of ovary, cutting off blood supply to the ovary and/or fallopian tube.

(Diagnosis)
• hysterosalpingogram: X-ray images to see the blockage of the fallopian tube after injection of a dye with a thin catheter inserted through the cervix and uterus.
• ultrasound
• laparoscopy

(Treatment)
• salpingostomy: A minimally invasive surgery that unblocks the fallopian tube.
• salpingectomy: Removing the entire fallopian tube.
