This surgical video demonstrates the removal of a soft-tissue sarcoma, called a liposarcoma, from the posterior thigh in a procedure named radical resection. In this surgical procedure, a soft-tissue dissection was performed, which ultimately exposed the liposarcoma in the posterior thigh, and then the tumor was carefully removed from the sciatic nerve without causing any nerve damage. Radical resections include the removal of the entire tumor along with margins surrounding the mass. These types of resections are commonly performed on soft-tissue sarcomas to minimize recurrence, or the chance of the cancer returning.
Liposarcoma is a cancerous tumor that occurs in soft-tissues, also referred to as a soft-tissue sarcoma. This soft-tissue sarcoma presents as a growing mass that may cause pain. Liposarcomas are commonly found in the soft-tissues of the extremities, particularly the thigh. There are several subcategories to liposarcoma, including: low-grade (well differentiated) liposarcoma, myxoid liposarcoma, round cell liposarcoma, dedifferentiated liposarcoma, and pleomorphic liposarcoma. Radical resections are a common and effective treatment option for liposarcomas.
