What is a Liver Cirrhosis?

To put it simply, cirrhosis of the liver is a complication that occurs due to continuous damage to the liver. When a person suffers from liver damage due to other diseases, unsuitable treatments or lifestyle choices, liver tries to repair itself. New cells form to replace the ones that are lost and over time the inflammation gets repaired.

However, in case the damage is occurring on a consistent basis, this overactive cell generation causes adhesion inside of the scar tissue. Like, if you have too much drinking habit, you will end up noticing signs of acute liver failure in cirrhosis.

Liver Cancer and Cirrhosis:

It is not well understood how cirrhosis increases cancer risk. “But it may be related to the increased opportunity for DNA changes to develop as the liver cells reproduce in response to the damage that leads to cirrhosis.”

Another factor, he continues, can be that the presence of cirrhosis “reflects a long duration of damage. The longer the duration of damage, the greater the chance that cancer-causing changes in DNA will occur."

Some Facts:
1. 70% liver cancer found in liver cirrhosis patient

2. 3 to 5% of liver cancer found in liver cirrhosis patient every year

Stages of Cirrhosis of the Liver:

● Stage 1 –
Also known as the compensated cirrhosis, this is the lowest grade of this condition, and is not diagnosed most of the time. Notably, because no chronic liver cirrhosis symptoms appear during this stage, and thus goes unnoticed.

● Stage 2 –
In this stage, varices develop due to a deterioration of portal hypertension. Symptoms are less but visible.

● Stage 3 –
Commonly described as the decompensated cirrhosis, this stage does get attention, because of the dismal condition of the liver. Your abdomen would appear swollen and other harmful complications are also prominent.

● Stage 4 –
As the last stage, this is the most dangerous one (also called ESLD) and beyond the point of remedies. The only option left is getting a transplant.

Eligibility For Liver Cancer Surgery:
* LFT Normal
* HVPG is less than 10 mmhg
* No Symptoms
* Size of Tumor

If liver surgery is not possible second option is Liver Transplantation.

What is a liver transplant?
A liver transplant is an operation in which the patient’s diseased liver is replaced with either a completely or partially healthy liver from a donor. Unfortunately, an inadequately-functioning liver cannot be replaced by a machine that can mimic the liver’s functions.

Therefore, a liver transplant is the only option and it should be undertaken when you have any liver disease like liver cancer, liver failure or liver cirrhosis. Liver Transplant is the best treatment option for end-stage liver diseases that can not be treated with any other ways.
