What is the common difference between the liver cyst and liver cancer. Commonly we see a simple cyst of the liver or a polycystic liver or hydatid cyst of the liver. These are many cause of the liver cyst. Many at times the simple cyst of the liver need not be addressed, just wait and watch, it may grow in size or it may affect the function of the liver. But in hydatid cyst, it is a protozoal infected cyst this is a dog tapeworm cyst that had to be managed correctly. Hydatid cyst of the liver can be managed by Laparoscopic Hydatidcystectomy. There are cancers of the liver, secondaries in the liver from multiple organs like from the stomach, small intestine or the colon. We can see deposits of cancers which are not from the liver but from other organs. This has to be diagnosed properly. Investigations like tumor markers, alpha ketoprotein, chorioembryoinic antigen will give a clue where the primary tumor has arised from. In a case of pancreatic tumor we do a CA 99,which will give an idea where the primary malignancy or the cancer has come up. Accordingly the cancer of the liver has to be managed. Primary hepatoma has chemotherapy as the management. Colonic cancer as a primary would need primary surgical correction of the colonic cancer and then post operatively subject the patient for chemotherapy. Thus multiple condition of the liver can be managed.
