Can a Low Sugar Diet "Starve Cancer?" administrator 6 Visninger • 2 flere år siden

Cancer is scary. And fear can lead us to try and find hope in some pretty dubious treatment suggestions. There's a myth circulating in internet health circles that eating a low-sugar diet can somehow starve the cancer and shrink tumors. Today we'll look at how that is supposed to work, and look at the research on whether any of it is real.

Some myths about cancer are surprisingly persistent, despite flying in the face of biology. One such idea is that overly ‘acidic’ diets cause your blood to become ‘too acidic’, which can increase your risk of cancer. The proposed answer: increase your intake of healthier ‘alkaline’ foods like green vegetables and fruits (including, paradoxically, lemons). But there’s no good evidence to prove that diet can mani****te whole body pH, or that it has an impact on cancer.

The level of evidence required to make decisions depends on the level of risk. If we’re talking about some new drug, for example, given the fact that medications kill more than 100,000 Americans a year (Why Prevention Is Worth a Ton of Cure (https://nutritionfacts.org/vid....eo/why-prevention-is you want to be darn sure that the benefits outweigh the risks before you prescribe it (or take it!). But what level of evidence do you need to eat broccoli? Do you need randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials? (How would you even design a placebo vegetable?) Even if all the evidence suggesting powerful broccoli turned out to be some crazy cruciferous conspiracy, what’s the worst that could have happened. It’s healthy anyway. That’s the beauty of safe, simple, side effect-free solutions provided by the lifestyle medicine approach. It can only help.
