Karolyn Lewandowski is the Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel of the Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (ACPMP) Research Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on sponsoring research towards pseudomyxoma peritonei, appendix cancer, and related peritoneal surface malignancies.
As Lewandowski explains in this video, there are numerous types of appendix cancer and those cancers may lead to pseudomyxoma peritonei.
Pseudomyxoma Peritonei is a rare condition characterized by the ac****ulation of mucin in the abdominal cavity. Different cancers can lead to the pseudomyxoma peritonei but the most common cause is appendix cancer – including low grade mucinous neoplasms of the appendix.
Both appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei are extremely rare conditions and due to the vague symptoms (bloating, gastrointestinal discomfort, etc), the age of most patients (40s or 50s), and the lack of knowledge about the condition in the medical community, it is often difficult to diagnose quickly.
ACPMP is funding numerous studies to improve our understanding these conditions as well as seeking a treatment. To that end, the organization is helping to fund a phase 1 / 2 clinical trial currently underway in Australia testing the combination of bromelain and acetylcysteine being injected directly into the tumor or peritoneal cavity to see if it will dissolve the tumor.

Mrs. Trivedi experienced pain around the abdomen and following further screening, her appendicitis operation was planned at the hospital. But during the course of treatment, her advanced cancer was revealed which shook the entire family to the core. The first surgery, after which she was put on a colostomy bag, was timely reversed and Mrs. Trivedi was being prepared for surgery and chemotherapy. Under the supervision of Dr. Meenu Walia (http://bit.ly/2vMFAUJ), Senior Director, Medical Oncology, her case was evaluated in a multi-disciplinary board meeting and she was placed under adjuvant therapy. As her treatment progressed, Mrs. Trivedi showed positive signs of improvement and could admirably cope with the side effects.
At Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, a multi-modality approach is often adopted to chart the best treatment procedures.
