Karolyn Lewandowski is the Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel of the Appendix Cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (ACPMP) Research Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on sponsoring research towards pseudomyxoma peritonei, appendix cancer, and related peritoneal surface malignancies.

As Lewandowski explains in this video, there are numerous types of appendix cancer and those cancers may lead to pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei is a rare condition characterized by the ac****ulation of mucin in the abdominal cavity. Different cancers can lead to the pseudomyxoma peritonei but the most common cause is appendix cancer โ€“ including low grade mucinous neoplasms of the appendix.

Both appendix cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei are extremely rare conditions and due to the vague symptoms (bloating, gastrointestinal discomfort, etc), the age of most patients (40s or 50s), and the lack of knowledge about the condition in the medical community, it is often difficult to diagnose quickly.

ACPMP is funding numerous studies to improve our understanding these conditions as well as seeking a treatment. To that end, the organization is helping to fund a phase 1 / 2 clinical trial currently underway in Australia testing the combination of bromelain and acetylcysteine being injected directly into the tumor or peritoneal cavity to see if it will dissolve the tumor.
