Gallbladder cancer is most common in people who have gallstones or have had gallstones in the past. Signs and symptoms of gallbladder cancer include jaundice, fever, and pain. Gallbladder cancer is difficult to detect and diagnose early. A small step like early screening, detection, and timely starting of appropriate treatment goes a long way in saving a life.
Let’s hear Dr Waliullah Siddiqui's (Consultant - Surgical Gastroenterology & Liver Transplant, Apollomedics Hospitals, Lucknow) insights on the gall bladder and pancreas cancer in the symptoms, prevention and treatment of cancer.

Surgical Oncologist Dr V Balasubramaniam discussed the challenges faced by gallbladder cancer.
Two reasons why it's difficult to treat gallbladder cancer:
- Symptoms are not present in the early stages - patients are normally diagnosed late when they have advanced stage gallbladder cancer. In the advanced stage, the treatment is usually prolonged, if it is locally advanced the patients need to be given adjuvant therapy to reduce the burden of the tumor pre-surgery. Also, these patients also undergo chemotherapy and radiation before surgery due to which their health and general condition are a little deteriorated - hence it is important that the patients are nutritionally well and healthy before the surgery so they can withstand it.
- Lack of high surgical expertise: Surgery involves not only the removal of the gallbladder but also removal of some part of the liver- this requires experts with a high level of surgical expertise which is available only in tertiary care centers/hospitals. The surgery is not difficult, but peripheral centers may not have the expertise to perform the surgery. to add to it not all peripheral centers have the facilities available for radiation or advanced chemotherapy
