Surgical Oncologist Dr V Balasubramaniam discusses early detection of Gallbladder Cancer.
Gallbladder cancer does not show any signs or symptoms in the early stages - one of the reasons why it is not detected early. Ultrasounds are the most easily and readily available modality that can help detect cancer in the early stages. But subjecting a large population to ultrasounds as a screening process is not viable. There are no blood markers for this type of cancer. If detected in the early stages, surgery is the primary treatment given for these cancers, apart from the gallbladder, surrounding lymph nodes, a part of the liver may be removed.

Surgical Oncologist Dr V Balasubramaniam helps us understand the common signs and symptoms of Gallbladder cancer better.
In the initial stages, gallbladder cancer is asymptomatic. This means that there will probably not be any obvious symptoms to indicate that you have cancer. As the disease progresses you may experience pain on the right side of your abdomen, indigestion, loss of appetite etc. In the advanced stage, jaundice-like symptoms may appear because the gallbladder is situated close to the liver.

What causes gallbladder cancer?
The exact cause of gallbladder cancers is not known. However, those who have developed gallbladder stones or polyps in the past seem to be at higher risk of developing gallbladder cancer. This does not mean that everyone who has gallbladder stones or polyps will surely develop cancer.

Gallbladder cancer is a rare, but very aggressive type of cancer that forms in the small pear-shaped organ attached to the liver. The gallbladder acts as a storage pouch for the digestive bile created by the liver. Many patients worry that having gallstones makes them high risk for gallbladder cancer. There has been no definitive relationships seen between the two, though there may be a very slight increase in the risk of gallbladder cancer in those who have extremely large gallstones. With that being said, when the gallbladder is removed - usually because of symptomatic gallstones, it is almost always sent to pathology, where it is checked for signs of malignancy.
Gallstones are extremely common with upwards of 10-15% of all adults having them. Of those individuals with gallstones, somewhere between 10 to 20% become symptomatic. The symptoms of gallstones can vary between people. Most patients experience pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, especially after eating, when the gallbladder squeezes bile out into the digestive system. More severe attacks may be debilitating and patients will feel nauseous and even vomit, along with feeling a general sense of malaise.
The only definitive treatment for symptomatic gallstones is the removal of the gallbladder, known as a cholecystectomy. This is one of the most straightforward and safest of the general surgery procedures we offer. Unfortunately, other interventions such as dietary gallbladder flush is, chemical dissolution of gallstones and more typically do not work and some may even be problematic.

3 Early Warning Signs of Gallbladder Cancer
When caught early, gallbladder cancer is treatable with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. In many cases, the cancerous tumors can be completely removed. When treatment is complete, patients are typically required to undergo regular testing procedures such as computed tomography, or CT, scans and blood tests every six months. If symptoms recur, additional treatment methods may be recommended.
Abdominal Symptoms
Abdominal symptoms are common in gallbladder cancer, as the organ tends to enlarge when the cancer progresses. Abdominal symptoms may mimic other less serious conditions, which can lead to delayed diagnosis. Common abdominal symptoms of gallbladder cancer include upper right abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating and black, tarry stools.
Appetite Loss and Weight Loss
While appetite loss and weight loss can occur for a variety of reasons, individuals with early-stage gallbladder cancer often lose weight rapidly without explanation. During this time, appetite loss and nausea are also common.
Yellow Skin, Itching
Individuals with gallbladder cancer may also experience symptoms of yellow skin and eyes, also referred to as jaundice, due to growing tumors that block the bile ducts. The buildup of bile can also cause severe skin itching all over the body. Jaundice is one of the more common symptoms of the condition, with almost half of all diagnosed individuals presenting with symptoms at the time of diagnosis.
Conclusion
Gallbladder cancer develops in the gallbladder, an organ in the body that sits directly beneath the liver. The gallbladder is essential in the digestive process, as it concentrates the liver bile that aids in digesting fats. In most cases, gallbladder cancer does not cause symptoms until the condition has spread, so early diagnosis can be challenging. Additionally, as of 2015, there are no early screening or blood tests that can accurately diagnose gallbladder cancer in its early stages. However, when the first noticeable symptoms develop, seeking immediate medical attention can ensure prompt detection and treatment.

Gall bladder cancer symptoms and treatment
Gallbladder cancer is a rare cancer that starts in the cells of the gallbladder, a small organ located beneath the liver. It often doesn't cause any symptoms until it has progressed to an advanced stage, which makes it difficult to detect and treat.
Some of the common symptoms of gallbladder cancer include:
Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially in the upper right part of the abdomen
Nausea and vomiting
Unintentional weight loss
Loss of appetite
Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)
Fever and chills
Fatigue
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately. Early detection is key to successful treatment.
Treatment for gallbladder cancer depends on the stage and location of the cancer, as well as the patient's overall health. Some of the treatment options include:
Surgery: Surgery is the most common treatment for gallbladder cancer. Depending on the location and stage of the cancer, the surgeon may remove the gallbladder, part of the liver, and nearby lymph nodes.
Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It may be used before or after surgery, or in cases where surgery is not possible.
Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams to kill cancer cells. It may be used before or after surgery, or in combination with chemotherapy.
Clinical trials: Clinical trials test new treatments for gallbladder cancer. Your doctor can tell you if you are eligible for any clinical trials.
It's important to discuss all the treatment options with your doctor and make an informed decision. Gallbladder cancer is a serious condition, but with prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the prognosis can be improved.
