At this year's meeting, experts from around the world convened in Barcelona, Spain from 29 June - 2 July 2016 to present, discuss, and debate the latest advances, treatment strategies, and guidelines for the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies.

After Charlotte lost her sister to pancreatic cancer, she was asked to return to her hometown and share her family's story at a local awareness program. Charlotte was screened for pancreatic cancer as part of the program and a cyst was found on her pancreas. She met with doctors there and later came to UCLA for surgery, where she met Dr. Reber and his team. Within 1 month from diagnosis, her cyst had grown again by the day of surgery. Since then, Charlotte has completed her last chemotherapy treatment and celebrated her 85th birthday. As Charlotte said, she is very grateful to Dr. Reber for not "throwing her away" because of her age and other medical issues. Charlotte learned about the Hirshberg Foundation and Agi Hirshberg Symposium from Dr. Reber's office. Charlotte found everything she heard at the Symposium validated what she has discovered since her diagnosis, i.e. importance of exercise, attitude, spiritual meditation, etc. Charlotte concluded saying that attitude has been very important along the way, plus all the information she has gained.

Wilms tumor (also called Wilms’ tumor or nephroblastoma) is a type of childhood cancer that starts in the kidneys. It is the most common type of kidney cancer in children. About 9 of 10 kidney cancers in children are Wilms tumors.

Cancer starts when cells in the body begin to grow out of control. Cells in nearly any part of the body can become cancer, and can spread to other areas of the body

Wilms tumors are grouped into 2 major types based on how they look under a microscope (their histology):

Favorable histology: The cancer cells in these tumors don’t look quite normal, but there is no anaplasia (see next paragraph). About 9 of 10 Wilms tumors have a favorable histology. The chance of curing children with these tumors is very good.
Anaplastic histology: In these tumors, the look of the cancer cells varies widely, and the cells’ nuclei (the central parts that contain the DNA) tend to be very large and distorted. This is called anaplasia. In general, tumors in which the anaplasia is spread throughout the tumor (known as diffuse anaplasia) are harder to treat than tumors in which the anaplasia is limited just to certain parts of the tumor (known as focal anaplasia).
