What is Pituitary Gland? | Pituitary Tumor | Tumor | brain tumor symptoms
In this video, Dr Gurneet Singh Sawhney - Senior Consultant Neuro and Spine Surgery (Fortis Hospital, Mulund) talks about the pituitary tumor. The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain and releases the hormones in the body. This gland is located just below our optic nerve or eyes. Hence, the gland is one of the important organs of the body.
If a person suffers from such tumor various brain tumor symptoms occur. The most common symptom is that patient starts facing vision issues. Their peripheral vision is lost due to such type of brain tumor. As tumor increases, it overshadows optic nerves, hence patient faces vision issues. Another symptom is when the supply of hormones increases in the body, their weight increases, the amount of steroids increases in their body, or they start facing rashes leading to Cushing’s Disease. Apart from that such patient’s height may increase or facial structure may change suddenly.
If a person faces such brain tumor symptoms, they visit neurologist, andrologist or ophthalmologist after which an MRI is performed on them. Based on the report, patient goes to a skull-based endoscopic surgeon. The surgery for pituitary tumor happens from the nose without making any cut. The such tumor is then removed through endoscope. It is a highly advanced surgery technique whose success rate is very good.
The pituitary tumor is non-cancerous, hence surgery is an option for it. There is no post-operative care and also there are no scars after the operation. The patients are regularly provided with nasal washes. Hence, people should not fear pituitary tumor.

Stephen T. Magill, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern Medicine, discusses the presentation, diagnosis and management of pituitary tumors, including those that recur, as well as exciting future directions.
“When I think about where is progress really going to be made in pituitary and what are the things on the horizon that will help patients with pituitary tumors, the biggest need in my mind is optimizing function for patients who have functional tumors, and optimizing hormonal control for those patients,” says Dr. Magill. “And the future and the exciting developments in pituitary are the development of medical therapies that can treat the disease, to mask the effect of too much hormones, or targeted therapies with radiotracers, or targeted molecular therapies to treat pituitary tumors and, in particular, the functional tumors. I think that's an area of emerging research that we hope to be a part of and will really benefit patients in the future.”
