In this video, Dr Gurneet Singh Sawhney - Senior Consultant Neuro and Spine Surgery (Fortis Hospital, Mulund) talks about the pituitary tumor. The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain and releases the hormones in the body. This gland is located just below our optic nerve or eyes. Hence, the gland is one of the important organs of the body.
If a person suffers from such tumor various brain tumor symptoms occur. The most common symptom is that patient starts facing vision issues. Their peripheral vision is lost due to such type of brain tumor. As tumor increases, it overshadows optic nerves, hence patient faces vision issues. Another symptom is when the supply of hormones increases in the body, their weight increases, the amount of steroids increases in their body, or they start facing rashes leading to Cushingโs Disease. Apart from that such patientโs height may increase or facial structure may change suddenly.
If a person faces such brain tumor symptoms, they visit neurologist, andrologist or ophthalmologist after which an MRI is performed on them. Based on the report, patient goes to a skull-based endoscopic surgeon. The surgery for pituitary tumor happens from the nose without making any cut. The such tumor is then removed through endoscope. It is a highly advanced surgery technique whose success rate is very good.
The pituitary tumor is non-cancerous, hence surgery is an option for it. There is no post-operative care and also there are no scars after the operation. The patients are regularly provided with nasal washes. Hence, people should not fear pituitary tumor.
