Basal Cell Carcinoma of the Skin

Basal celll carcinoma curettage and cautery is a minimally invasive treatment for a form of skin cancer. Our technique is uniquely using chemical cautery with silver nitrate (AgNO3) instead of electrocautery. The standard procedure is to use a curette to remove the cancer cells while leaving the normal skin intact. This is followed by cautery to stop any bleeding in the are where the cancer was removed. The procedure is then repeated twice for a total of three times. It has a high success rate, but even if the basal cell carcinoma recurs it does not spread. It can be treated again with the same or different treatment. Other treatments include topical cream chemotherapy, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, or extensional removal of the cancer and surrounding margins of normal skin.

Learn about the three main types of skin cancer. Skin cancer occurs when skin cells start growing abnormally, unpredictably, and uncontrollably. Most skin cancers develop on the visible outer layer of the skin, particularly in sun-exposed areas like the head and neck, hands, arms, and legs. Of all the cancers that humans can get, skin cancer is by far the most common and it is estimated that 1 in 5 Americans will get skin cancer by the age of 70!
