Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer with a high cure rate.
A shave biopsy is a common diagnostic tool where a small sample of skin is shaved off. The procedure is used to confirm in-office diagnosis.
The sample or specimen is sent to a lab where a pathologist examines the sample for definitive diagnosis.
The pathologist can also determine the depth of the carcinoma—whether superficial in, in the top layers of skin, or deeper in the skin.
Basal cell carcinomas can be treated topically with a prescription cream—if superficial—or with minor surgery if deeper.
