When Nicole was 12 years old, she was diagnosed and successfully treated for cancer. Nicole thought that was the end of her journey with cancer until at the age of 30, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
During treatment at the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center, her doctors suspected she might have a hereditary condition. They referred her to the Stanford Cancer Genetic Program for specialized counseling, which revealed Nicole had Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare familial genetic syndrome that increases a person’s risk for multiple cancers. Armed with this knowledge, Nicole and her doctors were able to develop a risk management plan and now actively monitor her condition.
