In 1995, Mel was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). His prognosis was only three years, unless he had a bone marrow transplant. Mel immediately thought of his five-year-old daughter, Patrice. Would he see her grow up? He participated in numerous bone marrow drives but never found a donor match. Around the three-year mark, he enrolled in a clinical trial for a drug called STI-571, which was developed with funding from the American Cancer Society. Mel has survived more than 17 years on that drug, known as Gleevec.
