Kirsty's survived cervical cancer. This is her story.
Australian woman Kirsty Browne was diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was 26 years old. She shares her powerful story in this short film.
600,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year and more than 300,000 of those infected will die from the disease. Fortunately, Kirsty was not one of the women killed by this preventable cancer.
Kirsty’s cervical cancer was picked up at a pap smear, which she had regularly. Her cervical cancer diagnosis came as a surprise as she had received the HPV vaccination when she was a teenager and was screened regularly.
Kirsty’s treatment included surgery to remove her cervix. She was even told that she might be infertile.
Kirsty beat the odds and fell pregnant but in this short film she shares how cervical cancer has still impacted every facet of her life.
Kirsty’s message to women and girls everywhere is to be vaccinated at a young age, preferably before having a sexual partner. The HPV vaccine provided in Australia today prevents 90% of all cervical related cancers. Young women who are immunised may only need to be screened for cervical cancer once in their lifetime.
Australia has a very low mortality rate for cervical cancer: 1 in 100,000, which is world leading. Cervical cancer elimination is imminent in Australia, but women living in low and middle income countries have a much higher chance of being diagnosed with and dying from this type of cancer.
This is why we must strive for cervical cancer elimination in every country.
The Conquering Cancer Campaign is a global communications initiative celebrating every effort to eliminate cervical cancer around the world. Because a woman’s chance of surviving cervical cancer shouldn’t depend on where she resides.
Join the Conquering Cancer Campaign today and help us show leaders everywhere that eliminating cervical cancer is an achievable goal in every country.
