Exploring Diverticulosis, Liver Disease, and Colorectal Cancer in the Elderly | Dr. Vedant Karvir
In this informative YouTube video, Dr. Vedant Karvir, a highly experienced Hepato-Gastroenterologist practicing in Mumbai, talks about common concerns faced by the elderly: Diverticulosis, Liver Disease and Colorectal Cancer.
Dr. Karvir begins by explaining diverticulosis, a condition characterized by the formation of small pockets or pouches in the left side of the colon, known as the sigmoid colon. These pouches can trap stool, leading to inflammation and abdominal pain. In some cases, diverticulosis can also cause loose motions or diarrhoea. He emphasises the importance of managing diverticulosis through regular exercise, increased water intake, and a high-fiber diet. If these measures are ineffective, laxatives may be prescribed, and in rare severe cases, surgical intervention may be required.
The video then delves into another significant concern among the elderly: colorectal cancer. Dr. Karvir highlights that it is more prevalent in individuals over 50 years of age. Symptoms of colorectal cancer include rectal bleeding during bowel movements, unexplained weight loss, and an increase in nocturnal bowel movements. He emphasises the importance of taking these symptoms seriously and undergoing a colonoscopy for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Lastly, Dr. Karvir discusses liver disease, particularly cirrhosis of the liver, which tends to progress with age. He advises individuals with cirrhosis, especially elderly patients, to undergo a comprehensive liver evaluation to determine the best course of treatment. If cirrhosis is alcohol-related, strict avoidance of alcohol is crucial. For those with metabolic factors contributing to cirrhosis, such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, or dyslipidemia, it is important to identify and manage these underlying conditions effectively. Dr. Karvir also mentions that in some cases, liver transplants may be considered as a treatment option.
Overall, this YouTube video provides valuable insights and recommendations from a knowledgeable expert regarding common gastrointestinal concerns among the elderly. It serves as an educational resource to promote awareness, early detection, and proper management of these conditions for a healthier and improved quality of life.
