Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the WHO, discusses cervical cancer prevention and the global strategy to eliminate the disease this century.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer that can be prevented by HPV vaccination, early detection and effective management.

Still, cervical cancer remains one of the greatest threats to women’s lives. Close to 600,000 women are diagnosed with the disease every year and more than half die.

To put that into perspective, a woman loses her life to cervical cancer every two minutes, with about 90% of those deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) and HPV vaccination plays an important role in preventing cervical cancer developing.

If the entire population can be immunised against HPV over the next 40 years, it is reasonable to expect that cervical cancer can be eliminated for future generations.

Cervical screening also plays an important role in preventing women already exposed to HPV from developing cervical cancer. We must act now to vaccinate young girls in every country against HPV, ensure cervical screening is available to women everywhere, and deliver lifesaving cervical cancer treatment to the women who need it.

In recognition of this, WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made a global call for action on 19th May 2018 towards the elimination of cervical cancer.

"Our challenge is to ensure that all girls globally are vaccinated against HPV and that every woman over 30 is screened and treated for pre-cancerous lesions. To achieve that, we need innovative technologies and strategies.” - Dr. Tedros Adhanon Ghebreyesus

In this extended interview with Dr. Tedros, he explains why “failure to eliminate cervical cancer isn’t an option.” And calls on the international community to help less affluent regions prevent and eliminate the disease.
