Colon is the last part of gastrointestinal tract. Rectum is the last part of colon. Cancers of colon and rectum are common and are combined as colorectal cancer
Colon cancer is common, but is curable also
Risk factors : Single factor is not a cause
1. Age : As the age increases, risk of colon cancer also increases
2. Alcohol
3. Smoking
4. Obesity
5. Diabetes mellitus
6. Sedentary life style
7. Low fibre high fat and high calorie diet, red meat
8. Family history of cancer
9. Genetic causes : lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis
10. IBD – Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative colitis
11. Past history of polyps and cancer
Cancer screening : After age of 50, every 10 year colonoscopy
Symptoms
1. Recent change in bowel habits
2. Lower abdomen pain, bloating
3. Blood in the stool
4. Weakness
5. Weight loss
Prevent cancer
1. Avoid smoking/heavy alcohol
2. Exercise
3. Avoid obesity
4. High fiber diet
Diagnosis
1. Colonoscopy and biopsy
Staging:
1. Chest and abdomen CT
2. MRI / EUS for rectal cancer

Treatment
Rectal cancer
Early stage : Endoscopic submucosal dissection, Transanal minimally invasive surgery
Locally advanced: Chemotherapy, radiotherapy followed by surgery
Metastatic : Chemotherapy followed by surgery
Unrescetable disease : Chemotherapy with or without stenting
Colon cancer : Local spread : Surgery with or without chemotherapy
Metastatic : Chemotherapy followed by surgery
Unrescetable disease : Chemotherapy with or without stent placement
How to prevent colon cancer
No alcohol, smoking, maintain weight, screening colonoscopy and polypectomy
