'Bowel Cancer... You're Never Too Young': Gemma's Story (25)
You have bowel cancer…
Four words you don’t expect to hear when you’re young.
Yet the reality around one thousand one hundred Australians under the age of 50 are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year.
And more than 200 of those young people will die from the disease.
There is a common misconception that bowel cancer is just an ‘old person’s disease’.
But you’re never too young to have bowel cancer.
The rates of early-onset bowel cancer continue to rise…
Despite stabilising or falling rates in older people.
So regardless of age people should not ignore the warning signs.
And if you have a family history of the disease you need to talk to your GP.
Bowel Cancer Australia has created the Bowel Cancer… You’re Never Too Young initiative…
To raise community awareness of bowel cancer…
And provide support to young people diagnosed with the disease.
