Endocrinologists often struggle to diagnose primary hyperparathyroidism in patients with high calcium levels, why intermittent normal calcium levels are ok, and very informative data on negative sestamibi scans and negative ultrasounds.

In the thyroid gland there are a right lobe, a left lobe and a central portion called the isthmus, describes Dr. Robert Udelsman, Chief of Endocrine Surgery with Miami Cancer Institute, who affirms people can live fine with a half of the thyroid.

The parathyroid gland produces a parathyroid hormone that goes into the blood it circulates and it binds to receptors and it affects the calcium metabolism of the body.

Parathyroid glands can be hard to find, but an experienced surgeon can take less than 18 minutes to complete an MIRP "mini" surgery even if there is a negative sestamibi scan. Hyperparathyroidism patients should understand this information. Don't have an "exploration" operation!
