27 men shared their experiences with Leeds university researchers to see more visit http://www.healthtalkonline.or....g/Cancer/Penile_canc This research was funded by The National Institute of Health Research, UK. Healthtalkonline is accredited by the Information Standard.

Caution: This talk contains graphic images. Globally respected urologist, Dr. Rene Sotelo, approaches the difficult conversation about the prominence of penile cancer with sensitivity, professionalism and humor. He says, “We have increased the survival rate for breast and prostate cancer, but the survival rate for penile cancer has decreased. Why are people coming in late for treatment? It’s not because they don’t have access to medical services. It’s because of shame, fear, and ignorance of how severe penile cancer can be.” Dr. Sotelo hopes that by shedding light on this preventable cancer, he can reduce the stigma behind the disease and help his patients advocate for their own care and the care of their friends and family.
Dr. René Sotelo serves as a professor of urology at the Institute of Urology at USC and Medical Director of the International Services at Keck Medicine of USC. Recognized for his leadership in the field of laparoscopic and robotic repair techniques, Dr. Sotelo has performed more than 3,000 advanced laparoscopic-robotic surgeries, including complex urinary fistulae, radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, cystectomy, and inguinal lymphadenectomy. He is considered a pioneer among his peers and one of the most experienced surgeons in the world, for using these techniques to treat patients. As a distinguished researcher, Dr. Sotelo has published more than 60 articles on urology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
