A colostomy is a surgical procedure that creates a stoma. The path from the big intestine to the exterior of your body is created by the aperture. This is done so that solid stool and gas may exit the body via the stoma rather than the rectum. A pouch worn on the exterior of the body collects the waste. It is possible to have a colostomy that is either temporary or permanent.

Colonoscopies have been proven to help prevent colon cancer, but their effectiveness continues to be studied and optimized. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study by the Northern-European Initiative on Colorectal Cancer, which show a colonoscopy per the study protocol reduces colorectal cancer deaths. However, complicated data within the study that has been presented in a manner concerning to anyone who aims to prevent cancer. In their coverage of the study, CNN misinterprets the data, significantly changing its conclusion. There was uproar in the GI and colon cancer communities because it remains evident that having a colonoscopy helps prevent colon cancer. To clarify the results for patients this video disucsses the article, the published study, and my perspective as a GI doctor!

Of note - CNN published a new article discussing the study and admitting that colorectal screening does greatly decrease colon cancer related deaths.

Biography:

Sharon has been working in the field of Urology since 1978. Whilst a ward sister Sharon qualified as a Stoma Care Nurse and worked as a Urinary Diversion CPF (Clinical Practice Facilitator) and Psychosexual and Gender therapist at UCLH. Her NHS role involves teaching nurses who are caring for individuals having bladder reconstructive surgery.

As a ward sister she became concerned that patients who were undergoing surgical procedures for gender issues, fertility and sexual function, received little or no counselling. This led her to train as a counselling therapist. She studied for her MSc in Human Sexuality. Sharon currently works as a Gender and Psychosexual therapist in the NHS and the private sector.

David Ritchie, Patient.

Biography:

After a few years of symptoms and misdiagnosis, David was sent for a cystoscopy in October 2019. He was told that he had a tumour in his bladder and that he would probably have to have his bladder removed.

His first surgery confirmed his tumour was muscle-invasive, and that a bladder removal was the preferred course of action.

He elected to be assessed for a Neobladder reconstruction and, following a further surgery, had it confirmed that he would be suitable. He got confirmation that his surgery would take place at

the beginning of April 2020 but was then informed that he would no longer be able to have the Neobladder due to the COVID19 lockdown limitations in the hospital. Instead, he would have to have a stoma and urostomy.

"Things are different now, and I need to adapt to many circumstances, but it is do-able and not as bad as I first thought. Getting used to my new accessories took just a few weeks and I have found that I have been able to return to a very acceptable lifestyle with a positive can-do attitude."

David has since gone on to run a marathon and has many more planned. Life for David is different, but absolutely do-able!

Biography:

Susan, was diagnosed with Stage 3 High-Grade Advanced Bladder Cancer, in November 2017. A mental health Counsellor and Patient Advocate.

Susan enjoys family life and travel.

Prior to diagnosis Susan had not heard of Bladder Cancer despite a lifetime of associations with other cancers. Susan describes herself as a natural carer and probably a challenging patient.

After opting for life changing surgery namely a Radical Cystectomy, Susan connected with the Fight Bladder Cancer Charity UK and is a voice for bladder cancer and a ‘bladder buddy’ to fellow patients.

Susan’s mission is to continue raising awareness of bladder cancer worldwide through advocacy and patient groups.

This is me Jaichand Ghantelwal, who suffered from Colorectal cancer in 2013 when I was just 19 years old and had to go through major surgery. This video is a Cancer motivation video that will teach that life does not end with cancer, Cancer is just a disease. I have just tried to share my story of how I have survived from 3rd stage colon cancer or colorectal cancer.

I was diagnosed with colon cancer and got my treatment in Prince Ali Khan Hospital in Mumbai under the supervision of the Best Cancer Oncologist doctor Sultan Pradhan. Sultan Pradhan is one of the most respected oncologists (Cancer doctor Surgeon ). There are a lot of Cancer Hospital in Mumbai and Tata memorial in Mumbai is also one of the best Government Hospital especially for Cancer patient.


If you want to go to Tata memorial hospital you can either go from Dadar or step down from Prabhadevi Railway Station earlier this railway station was also known as Elphinstone Road Railways. From Elphinstone road railway station this Hospital is hardly 15 min away from walking.
