Do COLONOSCOPIES Actually PREVENT Colon Cancer?
Colonoscopies have been proven to help prevent colon cancer, but their effectiveness continues to be studied and optimized. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study by the Northern-European Initiative on Colorectal Cancer, which show a colonoscopy per the study protocol reduces colorectal cancer deaths. However, complicated data within the study that has been presented in a manner concerning to anyone who aims to prevent cancer. In their coverage of the study, CNN misinterprets the data, significantly changing its conclusion. There was uproar in the GI and colon cancer communities because it remains evident that having a colonoscopy helps prevent colon cancer. To clarify the results for patients this video disucsses the article, the published study, and my perspective as a GI doctor!
Of note - CNN published a new article discussing the study and admitting that colorectal screening does greatly decrease colon cancer related deaths.
