Patient Advocacy Summit Overview:
Patients with cancer often have widely divergent care experiences from screening through survivorship. Differences in care delivery and outcomes may be due, in part, to varying patient needs and preferences according to age and stage of life; inconsistent implementation of guidelines, recommendations, and policies; and unintended age bias in health care. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s® (NCCN®) Virtual Patient Advocacy Summit provided an opportunity for a varied group of stakeholders including patients, caregivers, providers, patient advocacy organizations, policymakers, and industry to thoughtfully discuss the importance of providing quality, effective, efficient, and accessible cancer care across the patient lifespan.

The NCCN Digital Resource Booklet includes information from 25 patient advocacy organizations on their age-specific programs and resources. This Booklet was developed in conjunction with NCCN Virtual Patient Advocacy Summit: Cancer Across the Lifespan held on December 10, 2020. From 2015 to 2019, the National Cancer Centre Singapore saw more than 2600 young persons newly diagnosed with cancer. Between 2021-2022, Dr Evelyn Wong and her team in Adolescents and Young Adults Oncology visited 4 young adults across Singapore to capture their individual stories and unique voices. AYAOs need specialised teams, treatments, spaces, support and research to improve their experiences and survival.

Learning about a cancer diagnosis is difficult for anyone - even more so for young adults in their prime. The Adolescents and Young Adult Oncology (AYAO) aims to improve cancer care for patients between 16-45 years old. We look into their needs beyond the usual medical aspects, building young adult friendly environments, developing standards for age-targeted care and hoping to improve collaborations between pediatric and adult specialists.

Naveen Pemmaraju, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, gives an overview of a special educational session held at ASCO 2023, which focused on approaching adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with various cancers. Topics that were addressed in this session include novel agents in development for acute leukemias, challenges with treating AYA patients with chronic leukemias, and advances being made in rare blood cancers, namely blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN). This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
