Leukemia - Acute Lymphoblastic - ALL - Childhood

Although the experience with any treatment can differ from person to person, Mark, Jonjo, David and Linda discuss some of the side effects they experienced after having a bone marrow transplant in treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), whilst offering practical advice to anyone preparing for the same procedure.
Each video in this series covers a different chapter in the journey of receiving a bone marrow transplant, a treatment option for some adults diagnosed with ALL.1
Whilst every cancer patient's experience is different, this video series hopes to give an insight into real stories, offer some practical advice and give support to anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis. However, individuals should always speak to their doctor or healthcare team when making any treatment decisions.
Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is a rare form of blood cancer that starts from white blood cells in the bone marrow. Although the majority of cases of ALL are diagnosed in younger people, it can also develop in adults.2

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is also called acute lymphocytic leukemia. “Acute” means that the leukemia can progress quickly, and if not treated, would probably be fatal within a few months.
"Lymphocytic" are early (immature) forms of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.
• Leukemia may affect red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
• Past treatment for cancer and certain genetic conditions affect the risk of having childhood ALL.
• Signs of childhood ALL include fever and bruising.
• Tests that examine the blood and bone marrow are used to detect (find) and diagnose childhood ALL.
• Certain factors affect prognosis (chance of recovery) and treatment options.
Signs of childhood ALL include fever and bruising.
• Fever from prolonged time.
• Easy bruising or bleeding from soft tissues
• Petechiae (dark-red spots under the skin caused by bleeding).
• Bone or joint pain.
• Painless lumps in the neck, underarm, or any other part of the body

6-year-old Omar is a typical young boy. He loves playing games, eating Cheetos, and, depending on the day, wants to become a police officer or own a pizza parlor. He is full of energy, but also quite shy until he is comfortable around a person.

About Omar:
In early 2012, Omar developed a fever and had stomach pains. His mother took him to the doctor, who thought it was a virus and put him on medication. Things didn't get better, and a few weeks later his parents noticed Omar's lymph nodes were swollen - he had some bruising, and developed a rash. When his noise started bleeding, his mother took him to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, who immediately transferred him to Primary Children's Medical Center. On March 8, 2012, doctors diagnosed Omar with T-Cell Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
Omar immediately began radiation and chemotherapy. Being in the hospital and undergoing so many treatments scared Omar. But things changed when he met the "red-haired nurse." Aubri and Omar developed a quick friendship. Omar has since developed a confidence when it comes to his treatments.
