Mitch Stone of Cincinnati was 11 years old when he was diagnosed with a PNET or a brain tumor. The treatment was aggressive. He needed radiation followed by high doses of chemotherapy. Long stays followed in isolation at Cincinnati Children's to protect his weekend immune system.
A bright spot in his treatment came when a radiologist at Cincinnati Children's recommended to Mitch a foundation that partners pediatric brain tumor patients with a sports team. For Mitch, it was the University of Cincinnati Football Team. The team adopted Mitch as one of their sown. Their bond helped Mitch get through his tough treatments and ended in a winning season. As a result of that partnership, his family started Mitch's Mission to help cancer patients attend summer camp at Camp Joy.
Now 18, Mitch enrolled in the fall at the University of Cincinnati to study operations management.X His goal is to one day work in hospital administration and continue helping patients.

Shock, disbelief and fear are all common reactions to having your child diagnosed with a brain tumor. Empowering yourself to ask questions and understand your options are important for finding the best treatment and outcomes for your child.
Mayo Clinic doctors discuss the considerations and factors associated with a new pediatric brain tumor diagnosis and offer advice to caregivers of children with brain tumors.
Establishing a correct diagnosis for the particular type of tumor is important. Even tumors deemed to be inoperable may be operable to centers with experience in all types of brain tumors, including the most rare or complex. Volumes and experience do impact outcomes.
Mayo Clinic provides a collaborative team of doctors who work together to look at a diagnosis comprehensively. Mayo Clinic specializes in molecular diagnoses of brain tumors, multidisciplinary treatment teams and innovative treatment options. Because Mayo Clinic pediatric brain tumor specialists and scientists are also researchers, Mayo Clinic is able to offer cutting-edge clinical trials.

When facing a child’s diagnosis, a family can be overwhelmed with all the information being presented to them. In this webinar, hosted by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation on February 18, 2021, Dr. Mary Baron Nelson of Children's Hospital Los Angeles, shares information to help a family navigate the first part of the journey. Learn how a tumor’s location can impact a child physically or emotionally; what the most common tumor types are in children and available treatments; and finally, how location of the tumor, age of the child, genetics, and pathology all factor into the treatments chosen.
