There are two types of causes when it comes to bile duct cancer they are:
1. non-modifiable factors
2. modifiable factors

Some most common causes of bile duct cancer are:
Increasing age – With increasing age the probability of one getting bile duct cancer increases, people above 60 years are more prone to have bile duct cancer.
Ethnicity – People living in South East Asian region have more risk of getting bile duct cancer in comparison with people from the Indian subcontinent or other western countries.
Genetic causes – Genetic problems such as primary sclerosing cholangitis, choledochal cyst, or Caroli syndrome can lead to bile duct problems.
Obesity – This is one of the most common reasons for bile duct cancer and also of many other cancers.

Other common causes of bile duct cancer are diabetes, smoking, exposure to chemicals, and chronic alcohol consumption.
The risk of bile duct cancer can be reduced if you maintain a proper diet, exercise regularly, and maintain your weight.
