Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in the lung tissue. The causes of lung cancer can be categorized into two main groups: environmental and genetic factors.
The most common environmental cause of lung cancer is smoking tobacco, which increases the risk of developing lung cancer by 15 to 30 times compared to non-smokers. Other environmental causes of lung cancer include exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, asbestos, and radon gas.
The symptoms of lung cancer may vary depending on the stage of the cancer and the location of the tumor. Early stage lung cancer may have no symptoms, or may present with mild cough or chest pain. As the tumor grows, it can cause persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, and loss of appetite. In advanced stages of lung cancer, symptoms may include coughing up blood, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, and severe pain.
