The most common risk factor for non-small cell lung cancer is cigarette smoking (former and current smokers). Other risk factors include second-hand smoke, and prior exposure to asbestos, radon, and radiation. There are also individuals for whom there is no clear identified risk factor - these can be individuals who are โ€œnever smokersโ€ and who have not had exposure to any of the traditional factors that can lead to an increased risk of lung cancer.
