Colon cancer is a very vague term because colon is a very big tube, starting for the caecum upto the rectum. The signs and symptoms is what the patient complains of. Depending on where the cancer is situated the signs and symptoms will be there. The commonest and most important one is bleeding while passing stools, especially it is mixed with stools, especially if it is mixed with stools that is an ominous sign. In elderly people you will have to do something called as colonoscopy. Bleeding while passing motion is very important and it should not be considered as heat and neglect it. It has to be investigated to know what is the cause of bleeding. Also pain while passing motion. If it is in the lower end. If it is in the rectum, the patients will have pain while passing motion or continuous pain in the pelvic region. Third is change in the bowel habits that is any change whether loose motion or hard stools or alternate hard stools and loose motion in a person who is passing regularly and at normal stools that also has to be investigated. That is because of rectal and colonic cancers, the next is swelling. Some person feel some lump in the abdomen and that can be one of the symptoms. The other one is a mucus diarrhea. Lot of loose motion type with lot of sticky mucus discharge. If it s very advanced stage, type may have jaundice. Where the cancer has spread to other organs and they may have urinary symptoms. Low back ache, pain referred to the thighs, hips. These are the other are manifestations or symptoms of any colonic cancer.
