Stomach cancer arises from the inner lining of stomach, which is a sac like organ in the upper abdomen. It aids digestion and storage of food. The risk factors include infection with H. Pylori, gastritis, smoking and ingestion salted food. The diagnosis is made by endoscopy and biopsy. Following diagnosis the disease is staged. Staging means determining extent of disease. It is done by CT scan or PET scan. If found to be localized it is treated by surgery followed by chemotherapy. If locally advanced then chemotherapy is administered before surgery. In cases where the disease has spread chemotherapy and targeted therapy is administered to prolong survival and improve quality of life.
