Richard Silver, MD
Dr. Richard Silver is a medical oncologist and hematologist who specializes in treating patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and myleoproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Myeloproliferative neoplasms are characterized by an over activity of blood cells in the bone marrow, and this group of diseases includes polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and primary myelofibrosis. Dr. Silver is a member of the nationally and internationally recognized team of leukemia experts at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Leukemia Program, and serves as the Emeritus Director of the Richard T. Silver MPN Center.
In this video, Dr. Silver shares about why he is drawn to the field of medicine, the importance of precision medicine and how he views his personal relationships with his patients. Dr. Silver highlights how chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) was first disease in which precision medicine was used. Knowing the molecular abnormality at work in this disease led to the creation of a new drug which not only caused remission of the leukemia, but a complete reversion of the abnormality. Ten years later, 95% of these patients are still alive and well. Genomic sequencing and precision medicine continue to allow the Weill Cornell Leukemia Program to bring our patients the most promising treatments available.
