Research shows artificial sweeteners can cause liver cancer
Commonly used sweeteners can cause cancer of the liver, according to research conducted recently at Upstate. Andras Perl, MD, PhD, led the research, which was published in the journal, Nature Metabolism. He’s a SUNY distinguished professor and also the division chief of rheumatology at Upstate. In this "The Informed Patient" podcast, he explains the role of enzymes and sugar alcohols and why he has curtailed his use of products containing artificial sweeteners.
“The Informed Patient” is a podcast that covers health, science and medicine, featuring experts from Central New York’s only academic medical center. Upstate Medical University has four colleges (Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions and Graduate Studies); a robust research enterprise; and an extensive clinical health care system that extends way beyond Syracuse.
