Skin Cancer Treatment Miami: Dr. Mark Pomper says most eyelid cancers do not require invasive and disfiguring surgery and can be treated non-invasively with radiation therapy.
He tells Health Specialist Marilyn Mitzel patients should get a 2nd opinion from a radiation oncologist if theyโ€™re told invasive eyelid surgery is their only option because often radiation therapy is a better option.

The eyelid region is one of the most common sites for skin cancers.
About 5-to-10% of all skin cancers occur on the eyelid.
The eyelid skin is the thinnest and most sensitive skin on the body and is easily damaged by sun exposure.

The most common type of eyelid cancer is basal cell carcinoma most often found on the lower eyelids and almost never spread to other parts of the body or metastasize.

Symptoms of eyelid cancer include:
A change in appearance of the eyelid skin.
Swelling of the eyelid.
Thickening of the eyelid.
Chronic infection of the eyelid.
An ulceration (area where skin is broken) on the eyelid that does not heal.
A spreading, colored mass on the eyelid.

Early detection and treatment can mean a better outcome.

Currently, the standard treatment is complete surgical removal of the eyelid tumor followed by reconstruction or plastic surgery.

However surgical excision frequently causes functional and cosmetic impairment of the eyelid.
Decades of research has proven that radiation therapy in eyelid cancer is highly effective and safe.

The overall survival and local progression-free rates are 87% and 93% at 2 years, and 80% and 93% at 5 years.

A shield is used to protect the eyeball from being injured during radiation therapy.

Studies show it leads to good tumor control, functional and cosmetic preservation of the eyelid and prolonged survival.

The danger for patients is ignoring these slow growing tumors.

When left untreated, eyelid tumors can grow around the eye and into the orbit, sinuses and brain.

If you suspect you have an eyelid tumor get it checked right away.
