Prolactinoma - Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, And Treatment
Prolactinoma is a benign pituitary gland tumor, which produces the hormone prolactin in excess amounts.
It is the most common type of hormone secreting pituitary tumor.
Based on the size, prolactinomas are classified as micro prolactinoma, which is less than 10mm in diameter, and macro prolactinoma, which is more than 10mm in diameter.
The exact cause of prolactinoma is poorly understood.
However, several gene mutations have been identified to be associated with prolactinomas, including pituitary tumor transforming gene.
Most prolactinomas occur in isolation.
They can also occur as a part of familial syndromes, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia.
Signs and symptoms of prolactinomas occur due to hormonal effects, mainly prolactin, and due to space occupying effects of the tumor.
