Pancreatic cancer:

Common symptoms:
Jaundice
Loss of weight
Loss of appetite
Anemia
Back pain
Upper abdomen pain
Vomiting
If these symptoms are seen then the clinitian thinks of pancreatic cancer, by doing a pet CT scan this is diagnosed.

Risk factors:
Smoking
Alcoholism
Hereditary
Diabetes
Pancreatic cancer includes cancer originating in various parts of the pancreas.
The pancreas are divided into 4 parts:
Head , neck, body & tail
Cancer that originates in the pancreatic head will be mimicking cancer originating from the bile duct and in the duodenal carcinomas, all these are known as Periampullary carcinoma.

The tumors that originate in the body or tail have different presentation they generally present with loss of weight and loss of appetite there may not be any vomiting or jaundice in these patients.
Compared to the head of the pancreas tumor the tumor in the body or tail of the pancreas present late and respond to the treatment poorly.

Diagnosis:
The first important test is the CT scan
Upper GI endoscopy & ERCP
Liver function test
Complete blood picture
Endoscopy guided biopsy
For body and tail pancreas lesions PET CT scan is recommended

Treatments:
For tumors in the head of the pancreas, a surgical procedure called Whipple procedure is done.
This procedure is usually done in open method, but lately we have switched to laparoscopic or robotic.
For neck lesions we do a procedure called Central pancreatectomy, this is done for the tumors in the neck of the pancreas.
For body and tail pancreatic tumors, the procedure done is called Distal pancreatectomy, in this, there are two types, one is spleen preserving, or if it is not possible we do a splenectomy.

Precautions:
Quit smoking
Quit alcohol
Frequent checkups with the physician
