Pain management for patients undergoing Cancer treatment - Dr. Nanda Rajaneesh
Any patient who is undergoing treatment for cancer is likely to have pain because of many reasons. One is they have a cancer which is infiltrating on the nerve, or there is a recurrent disease which is spread all over the body and it is also attacking some of the nervous tissues. Pain is also because of huge, massive metastatic disease or enlarged organ which is pressing on the tissues of the body. So there are many reasons it might come. So the pain management in these people is mainly done step by step. Also we need to find out how much is the pain, what is the duration of the pain, what is the location of the pain. So one we can try with medications. Patients can be given even up to morphine if they need for pain management. And secondly we do the blocking of the nerves. The pain palliation specialist and radiologist can block the nervous tissue that can lead to pain which is directly connected to the tumour. They do it under radiology guidance. The other way to manage the pain is by doing the radiotherapy. Radiotherapy can also reduce the pain in many patients.
