About this video -
Small size to be inserted in the stomach through the nose.
Purpose -
To provide feeding unconscious patients and patients having mouth surgery.
Nasogastric tube feeding types -
A - Continuous feeding.
B - Bolus feeding.
A - Continuous feeding - small amount of feed given in long time also called regular feeding. person placed in semi fowler's position during this type of feeding.
B - Bolus feeding - this type of feeding also known as gravity feeding. in this large amount of feed given in short time ( within 20 minutes ) . during this feeding patient placed in fowler's position.

Types of nasogastric tube -
There are a total two types of nasogastric tube.
A - single lumen tube.
B - double lumen tube.
A - single lumen tube - also known as levin tube. This type of tube has one opening and it is used only for feeding.
B - double lumen tube - Salem Sump catheter, which is a large bore NG tube with double lumen ( 2 opening). Used for stomach irrigation also.
Nasogastric tube size -
For infants -
8 French ( Blue )
10 French ( black)
For child -
12 French ( white)
14 French ( green)
For adults -
16 French ( Orange)
18 French ( red )
20 French - ( yellow) for abnormally tall people.
Articles needed during the time of nasogastric intubation -
1% soda Bicarbonate for cleaning of nostrils.
Water soluble local anaesthesia like 2% xylocaine or 2% lignocaine.
Nasogastric tube proper size.
Syringe to check fixation.
Stethoscope glass.
of water with straw.
Procedure to administer nasogastric tube -
Consent must be taken.
Give high fowler's position.
Site of insertion left nostril.
Measurement of tube size from tip of nose to ear lobe then xiphoid process.
Apply 2% xylocaine at the tip of the nasogastric tube for anaesthesia and for lubrication.
Clean the nostril by 1% soda Bicarbonate.
Insert the tube in the left nostril and give instructions to the patient when you visualise the tube into the back of the throat and tell them to swallow like water.
If the patient is unable to swallow then give a glass of water with a straw and say sip water.
If during insertion respiratory distress occurs then full back the tube a little and wait for subside the condition and insert it again.
Then check the correct placement of the tube with the help of X-Ray.
Care of nasogastric tube -
Check placement before every feeding by aspiration or auscultation method.
Check residential volume before every feed Normal amount 100 ml if more than 100 ml holds next feeding.
Change feeding every 4 early.
change of feeding container every 24 hours.
change of nasogastric tube every 7 days or according to hospital policy.
Complications of nasogastric tube -
vomiting, diarrhoea, infection and pressure sore.
