Liver Cancer Stages And Their Survival Rates

Liver cancer is usually broken down into four stages: the higher the number, the more the cancer has progressed, and the lower the survival rate.

But The American Cancer Society also has a somewhat different way of measuring survival statistics for different types of cancer. It employs a database that tracks 5-year relative survival rates based on how far the cancer has spread. They are as follows.

Localized
This means thereโ€™s no sign the cancer has spread outside the liver.

Regional
The cancer has spread outside the liver to nearby structures or lymph nodes.

Distant
The cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, such as the lungs or bones.

According to the database, here are the percentages of liver cancer patients who survived for five years after being diagnosed at these three stages.

Localized 33%

Regional 11%

Distant 2%

For people with early-stage liver cancers who have a liver transplant, the 5-year survival rate is in the range of 60% to 70%.
