Surgery is typically not used in patients who have been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. The reason is that small cell lung cancer tends to spread much quicker into the blood stream than non-small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer is more often a systemic disease and as such the primary treatment is usually chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. There may be situations where surgery was used to remove a large mass in someone who was not yet diagnosed with lung cancer, however itโ€™s rare.
