How soon till you can eat again after Tongue Cancer surgery? - 10 days!!
Today was another milestone day as they took out the feeding tube. Now I had to start to eat again and the foods they gave me were a good effort at trying to make it look and taste like food.
I could only use a teaspoon as I could not open my mouth wide enough for a proper spoon plus the feeling of numbness meant I had no idea where my lips/ mouth/ tongue were and the nurses actually gave me a mirror to watch the spoon go up to my mouth. I was about the level of a 2 year old child. Crazy!
I ended up getting a neck infection which meant I had to stay in Guys hospital for a few more days. Initially, this was disappointing but now I was feeling so much better I just took this as time to chill, watch Netflix and read and sleep.
More great news was that I did not need radiotherapy as part of my tongue cancer recovery. I had heard nasty things about this and how hard it was and how difficult recovery can be because of it. The amazing surgeons had done such a good job of cutting out clear margins that the cancer had gone and they did not think it would come back. Hooray, no radiotherapy!
