Ewing Sarcoma is a rare type of musculoskeletal cancer that can be found in bones as well as the muscle tissues around the bones. It is more commonly found in long bones such as the forearm bones or thigh bones. It is also found in pelvic bones, the spine, and ribs. It is found in neck muscles, thigh muscles, stomach muscles, and back muscles as well.

The process to find if cancer has spread from where it began to another part of the body is called staging. Ewing’s Sarcoma which has spread from the initially affected bone to one or more sites in the body is labelled metastatic. If the findings are paired with fever, pain, and swelling, doctors often get confused about it being osteomyelitis i.e., a bone infection. Ewing’s Sarcoma is often confused to be osteomyelitis and is treated in the same way as osteomyelitis which can mar the treatment of Ewing’s Sarcoma.

Curative treatment modalities of Ewing’s sarcoma are chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy. Depending on the location and modalities of Ewing’s sarcoma the treatment is planned. Chemotherapy is a compulsory treatment of Ewing’s sarcoma. In most cases, patients can be treated with chemotherapy with surgery.

Surgical treatment involves wide excision surgery followed by reconstruction surgery. In complicated cases, doctors advise radiation therapy followed by remaining cycles of chemotherapy. If the patients are diagnosed well in time and proper treatment procedure is followed there are 70% chances of people getting fully cured of Ewing’s sarcoma.
